The Southern Africa Network for Biosciences Network Manager Dr Ereck Chakauya participated at the CAAST-Net Plus/ RECs workshop which was held recently in South Africa, Pretoria. The purpose of the workshop was to explore ways of bringing the regional blocs closer to Africa-EU research and innovation activities. NEPAD SANBio is a partner Centre of Excellence for the SADC Secretariat and implements both the Science Technology Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA 2024) and SADC RISDP.

The discussions included science programming and science strategy presentations by the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and other key stakeholders, and was chaired by the EU and AU representatives.

Recommendations from the meeting included:

•that the RECs conduct an internal meeting on their role in EU-Africa STI cooperation;

•that the RECs be involved in an upcoming meeting in Ethiopia on the Roadmap on EU-Africa Research and Innovation Partnership on FNSSA; and

•that the RECs are encouraged to participate in future High Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) meetings.
