CSIR 7th Conference

To celebrate its 75-year contribution to research, development and innovation in South Africa, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is hosting its 7th Biennial Conference, virtually, on 11 and 12 November 2020, under the theme, “Touching lives through innovation”.

The CSIR is bringing you a range of online talks, interviews, virtual tours and webinars by local and international experts. The conference programme has been designed around nine topics, namely chemicals, health, advanced agriculture and food, manufacturing, mining, defense and security, smart mobility, smart places and next-gen enterprises and institutions. Some special interest sessions have also been scheduled.

AUDA-NEPAD SANBio Network Manager, Dr Ereck Chakauya will facilitate the Advanced Agriculture and Food under the title: Integrating Climate Smart Crops into global value chains and to address food security in Africa on 11 November 2020, from 13h00 to 14h00.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Africa has been identified as the most vulnerable to the impact of climate change. In terms of food security, climate change has effects on crops we can grow.

Dr Chakauya’s session will among others explore how indigenous small grain cereals like sorghum and millet can play a vital role in addressing Southern Africa’s nutrition and food security challenges. The panel will also highlight some of the work that is being done globally and discuss collaboration for scale and impact in a global alliance and through private-public partnerships.

Panelist include,  Dr Ereck Chakauya, Network Manager: AUDA-NEPAD SANBio (Host), Dr Tawanda Muzhingi, Senior Scientist, International Potato Centre Regional Office for Africa, Nairobi, Kenya; Professor Trust Beta, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Functional Foods, Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, University of Manitoba and Dr Nomusa Dlamini, CSIR Principal Researcher.
