Bridging the gap between expensive first-world diagnostics and the developing worlds’ requirements for animal diseases


With an estimated 250 million heads of cattle in Sub-Saharan Africa, of which >13 million are in South Africa, the threat of Bovine Brucellosis to livelihoods is huge considering that the majority of the population lives in rural areas where their livelihood is largely dependent on subsistence farming and cattle rearing. It is imperative that rural communities get affordable tools and awareness of the disease so as not to engage in cultural practices that place them at risk of exposure to Brucella spp. and other zoonoses. SANBio/BioFISA supported a project to test a novel, simple and rapid field test for the serodiagnosis of brucellosis antibodies in cattle (Brucella abortus) which is as equally sensitive and specific for our environment in Southern Africa.
