SANBio Empowering Female-owned Bio-Businesses!
Applications closed 20 April 2018.
For FemBioBiz Season 2 over 500 applications were received from 10 countries. Over 150 of the applicants have been selected to participate in Phase 1, entailing a 3-day business model and pitch training, culminating in a pitching competition to select the participants going through to Phase 2.
Through our partners, in 2018 the FemBioBiz Acceleration Programme is implemented in eight countries:
Botswana (Botswana Innovation Hub) • Malawi (mHUB) • Mozambique (DEV Mozambique) • Namibia (NCRST) •
Seychelles (The Guy Morel Institute and NISTI) • South Africa (AWIEF) • Zambia (WECREATE) • Zimbabwe (National Biotechnology Authority)
Individuals from all the 13 SANBio member states in SADC were eligible to apply: successful applicants are taking part in the nearest country’s programme.
Prizes include cash grants and incubation support
Botswana – Prizes valued at R450 000!
Business Advisory services, capacity building and innovation support will be provided for a period of 6 months for pre-incubation, 18 months for incubation and 6 months for acceleration.
Seychelles – Prizes valued at R76 840!
Leadership and mentorship programmes in conjunction with partners such as Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority, Air Seychelles, Seychelles Investment Board and Seychelles Tourism Board.
Mozambique – Prizes valued at R228 000!
Incubation, marketing and financial support services for the top performers.
Zimbabwe – Prizes valued at R300 000!
Cash prizes and other in-kind contributions for the top performers.
Zambia – Prizes valued at R300 000!
Cash and incubation prizes for the top performers.
Malawi – Prizes valued at R206 640!
Incubation and mentorship for 3 months.
Namibia – Prizes valued at R300 000!
Cash and in-kind prizes including incubation and mentorship.
South Africa – Prizes valued at R300 000!
Up to R75 000 per winner in cash and in-kind prizes.

What is the FemBioBiz Acceleration Programme?
SANBio is looking for ambitious female leaders in bioscience-based businesses who would like to grow their business through an acceleration programme, and gain regional exposure and access to international markets.
Participants stand a chance to win amazing prizes in their countries, attend SA Innovation Summit, and an opportunity to attend Europe’s biggest start-up event - Slush!
FemBioBiz is funded by NEPAD SANBio with the support of BioFISA II, a Finnish-Southern African Partnership Programme to strengthen the SANBio network. Prizes at country level are courtesy of our partners.
The programme targets female entrepreneurs (and students) with a business involving biotechnologies and other technologies in health or nutrition under the following categories:
• Innovative businesses - Entrepreneurs whose business is based on an innovative biotechnology or other technologies that impact health and nutrition;
• Growth businesses - Bioentrepreneurs whose business is at minimum R 500 000 and are looking at growing their business twice as much within a year;
• Social enterprises - Private biobusinesses or bioenterprises with impact targeting the base or bottom of the pyramid (BoP);
• Female students in tertiary institutions - .
