Dr Boitumelo Semete
Dr Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela has been appointed Executive Manager: NextGen Health, effective 1 April 2019. She is also the Acting Executive Manager: Chemicals and Advanced Agriculture and Food clusters. Prior to her appointment, she was the Executive Director: Biosciences, also at the CSIR.
Boitumelo started her career at the CSIR in 2005 as a post-doctoral researcher, and later became a senior researcher, specialising in biochemistry and focusing primarily on nanotechnology drug delivery systems, while also lecturing immunology and nanotechnology at the University of Pretoria on a part-time basis. She also completed a postdoctoral programme at the University of Nottingham and EPFL, Switzerland. She has published as a first author and co-author in scientific publications, review articles and book chapters.
Semete-Makokotlela then moved on to become a McKinsey Leadership Fellow, consulting primarily in the pharmaceuticals sector and other sectors at McKinsey and Company. In 2013, she was appointed General Manager for research, development and innovation at the Innovation Hub. She has a PhD in biochemistry and molecular genetics from the North-West University, Potchefstroom campus, as well as a Master’s in management finance and investments from Wits Business School. She sits on a number of Advisory Boards, as well as Boards of Directors. She is also involved a number of thought leadership programmes within the bioeconomic sector.
