OVERVIEW

The NEPAD Southern Africa Network for Biosciences (SANBio), with support from the BioFISA II programme, have launched an acceleration programme aimed at supporting women in biosciences, called the FemBioBiz Acceleration Programme. SANBio is a platform for shared biosciences research, development and innovation to address health and nutrition issues of Southern Africa and it is hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa.

Over a period of six weeks, over 156 applications were received from nine countries in SADC. The first phase of the programme was carried out between 25 May and 28 June in six successive workshops in in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana and South Africa where participants were introduced to the Business Model Canvas and were taught the finer elements of Pitching.

For the FemBioBiz trainers and the BioFISA Programme this was an inspiring and inspirational opportunity to meet and engage with many interesting and passionate female entrepreneurs who are intent on making a difference to their worlds and others.

The 15 finalists of the competition completed an intensive entrepreneurial boot camp in Pretoria from 24 – 28 July. The final round of the pitching competition (Phase 3) will be held on 6 September 2017 in Cape Town at the 2017 SA Innovation Summit where these 15 entrepreneurs will be invited to pitch their business and meet investors and business experts.

The overall best performer will receive a grant of R250 000 to move the business forward and a trip to attend Europe’s leading start-up event Slush 2017 in Helsinki, Finland from 30 November – 1 December 2017.
