Dr Tichaona Mangwende

Dr Tichaona Mangwende is a Principal Programme Officer working as the Head of the Research and Statistics Cluster of the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) under the Industrialization Science, Technology & Innovation Hub. Currently the Cluster is leading the implementation of the African Science Technology and Innovation Indicators (ASTII) programme and Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI)-Theme 2. The ASTII programme is aimed at Improving the Measurement of the Performance of Africa’s R&D and Innovation Systems while the SGCI is focused on Strengthening the Capacity of Science Granting Councils to Champion the Use of STI Indicators in Public Policymaking. Previously, Dr Mangwende coordinated part of the EVAL HEALTH Project, an FP7 project funded by the EU that developed the Impact Oriented Monitoring methodology for assessing the impact of R&D projects in health (2012-2014). Prior the current engagement, Dr Mangwende was a research fellow in USA for 3 years and worked on identifying and characterizing virus encoded suppressors of gene silencing (2002-2005) before joining SANBio as a programme manager. Tichaona has a PhD in Plant Molecular Virology (2001) from the University of Cape Town-South Africa and more than 15 years of experience working on R&D and innovation projects. More importantly, Tich is the recipient of a South African Innovation Award (2005) for work done on developing transgenic maize resistant to Maize Streak Virus-A first for Africa. In addition he worked as the principal investigator of a project (1999-2002), funded by DGIS-The Netherlands, which developed drought tolerant maize in-bred lines using marker-assisted selection as an input the drought tolerant maize variety, SIRDAMAIZE113, which is on the market in Zimbabwe today. In health, Dr Mangwende worked as a Senior Researcher (2007-2009) on malaria and HIV pathogenesis at the University of Cape Town Medical School, Divisions of Pharmacology and Medical Virology respectively. Over the years he has also gained valuable experience in measuring the performance of R&D and Innovation systems.

Dr Tichaona is a member of the SANBio Steering Committee and also the outgoing chairperson (2015-present) of the BioFISA II Steering Committee.
