Malala Mulavu - Student at University of Zambia
Malala’s idea is that of an ovarian cancer screening test which uses metabolic products of cancerous cells (which are much higher and more irregular than regular metabolic products) in blood or urine specimens to detect the presence of cancer. The product should be a highly sensitive test strip that detects products of metabolism such as TCA cycle intermediates, fatty acids and amino acids and irregular proteins produced in excess by cancerous cells. The target market is hospitals and research facilities. This is a non-invasive test that would make diagnosis of ovarian cancer easier. There is currently no screening test for ovarian cancer on the market and this product could improve diagnosis and prognosis for many women suffering from ovarian cancer.
