NEPAD SANBio Welcome Back Message

NEPAD SANBio Network Manager, Dr Ereck Chakauya

On behalf of the NEPAD SANBio and BioFISA II Programme Unit and all stakeholders, it is with great pleasure to welcome you all to 2019! We hope you had a peaceful, safe and relaxed festive season, and that you are fired up for the New Year.

Year 2019 promises to be interesting but at the same time challenging because of the volatile economic and political environment both regionally and internationally. This may affect our resource mobilisation efforts but all the same provide opportunities for innovation in funding and organisation of R&D in order to reduce wasteful and fruitless expenditure. In the first half the year, we look forward to a number of exciting activities.

The SANBio Business Plan 2013-2018 will be coming to an end, and the processes of reviewing and drafting a new business and strategic plan has begun. A tender is out for consultants to apply. We expect the document to be validated by all stakeholders and presented at the ministers meeting around mid-year.

The year also marks 10 years of the BioFISA programme, and unfortunately the final leg of the programme’s journey. After a successful and fruitful four years of BioFISA II, we will be closing the BioFISA II programme this year with an Annual Event around mid-year. However, BioFISA has spawned new initiatives that we look forward to in this year.

SANBio and the Hivos Foundation have partnered to deliver the third season of FemBioBiz, to be launched in February 2019 in Zambia. FemBioBiz in 2019 will be big, insightful and an awesome partnership to support women and youth in business.

We are also super-excited to start a new project with the Southern Africa Innovation Support Programme (SAIS)-supported project “TECHTRIBE ACCELERATOR (TTA) “together with SA Innovation Summit, mHub-Malawi and Scaled Impact. The project will help our efforts to support technology-based entrepreneurs in the health and nutrition and the network’s quest to be one of the innovation networks championing Industrialisation.

I would like to thank our funders, our hosts and all stakeholders for the continued support and look forward to a prosperous 2019!
