Thiru Swettenham BioFISA II Programme Office Administrator/Manager

Mrs Thiru Swettenham joins the NEPAD-SANBio team as Office Administrator/Manager of the BioFISA II programme.  She is not new to the CSIR environment, she spent 15 years working with Forestek and various Biosciences programmes. She holds a Bachelor of Science Honours in Microbiology and Plant Pathology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Bachelor of Commerce in Industrial Psychology and Business Management from the University of South Africa.

Thiru has vast experience in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) and ICT for Development (ICT4D).  Her background is in Plant Biotechnology, but in 2007 she developed an interest in development programmes including working for World Bank Institute in South Africa, South African Finland Partnership on ICT (SAFIPA) and the Southern Africa Innovation Support (SAIS) which piloted in four SADC countries, namely Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland.

When asked about how NEPAD-SANBio fits into the big scheme of the changing innovation landscape in Africa, she replies: “Innovation is what is changing Africa’s future and we all have a part to play in changing the future of Africa. Challenges are also just opportunities to be innovative.”
